Your switchboard is the box that decides whether a fault stays small or turns dangerous.
Most people never open it. Here's how to tell if yours needs work, in about two minutes.
Open the door and look
Don't touch anything inside. Just look, and take a photo.
7 signs it's time
- 01
You see ceramic fuses.
White blocks you pull out and rewire. These are from decades ago.
- 02
There's no safety switch.
Look for a switch with a "test" button. No test button, likely no safety switch.
- 03
Only one safety switch for the whole house.
Modern boards split circuits across several.
- 04
Scorch marks, a burning smell, or buzzing.
Stop here and call an electrician.
- 05
Lights dim when the air con or kettle starts.
The board may be struggling.
- 06
You're adding something big.
Solar, a battery, an EV charger, induction, ducted air.
- 07
The board is asbestos-backed.
Common in older homes. Don't drill or cut near it.
What an upgrade gets you
- Safety switches that cut power fast enough to protect a person.
- Room for the circuits you'll add in the next 20 years.
- Clear labels, so you know what each switch does.
- A certificate of compliance for your records, buyers and insurer.
How long does it take?
Usually the power is off for a few hours. Your electrician should tell you when before the day.
Not sure?
Send me a photo of your board with the door open. I'll tell you straight if it needs an upgrade, and give you a fixed price if it does.
